Reflexion

“Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing.”  - Camille Pissarro

I know how hard it is to maintain happy feelings. Life happens. Stress takes over, sometimes bad things make it impossible to be optimistic. Or we just simply forget to notice the wonder we live in, every day.
I forget, a lot. All it takes is one crazy day and I start complaining and stop looking at the world around me. I suppose it's only natural. But I have learned to make an effort to find my way back to a place that isn't cynical, that place that allows me to see the world for what it truly is, a marvel of mystery. Even so, I don't get there every day.

There will always be good and evil, beauty and ugliness, sunshine and rain. We need to see both ends of the spectrum to appreciate those times when we stand in the middle. And if you think about, most of life is spent right there, in the middle.
We live a whole lot of average, ordinary days that we don't remember because nothing spectacularly good or bad happened. But the truth is, there is no such thing as ordinary.
Every day is unique, each day is a new beginning. They might not all turn out to be pretty or fabulous, or even forgettable, but each and every day is a clean slate with its very own pencil right there, hanging from a string.
We wake up each morning and we look in the mirror, and we see all the yesterdays that came before this day.
But do we see the beginnings? The possibility? Do we turn away from the mirror with a smile on our lips?
The yesterdays have molded us, the tomorrows give us hope, but we only ever get to live in today.

Breathe it in, this day. Reach for it. Embrace it, in all its glorious imperfection.
It's the only today you will ever have.

Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain a book about Using The Power of Your Imagination To Create What You Want In Your Life.

The idea behind creative visualization & affirmation is to use the  power of your mind to create positive change in your life. Such as achieving your goals, becoming a better person or living the life you've always wanted. You'll need to visualize what you want and genuinely believe that it is possible. That will give your affirmation the greatest power it needs, the power to remove negativity and allow the positive thinking to become a reality.

An affirmation can be a general statement or be very specific. Here are a few from the book ...

Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better.

Everything I need is coming to me easily and effortlessly.

My life is blossoming into total perfection.

I am the master of my life.

I love to love and be loved.

Perfect wisdom is in my heart.

I love doing my work, and I am richly rewarded, creatively and financially

It's ok for me to have everything I want!

I am now attracting loving, satisfying relationships into my life.

I am healthy and beautiful!

I am now enjoying everything I do.

I am now attuned to my higher purpose of life.

I give thanks now for my life of health, happiness and self-expression

I am an open channel of creative energy.
Do you have your affirmation – what is it?  Can you visualize it?
Think about it, repeat it to yourself.
Now Create The Life You Want!

Tea Time

Hey!

How's your week been? I hope it's been ok for you.
I have been keeping myself busy, exercising, volunteering, cleaning up the house and painting.
It helps to do productive stuff to make everyday more usefull and feel a sense of accomplishment.
My tea collection needs to be stocked up pretty soon.
I really enjoy my tea's..While on vacation in Portland I made a visit to the Chinese gardens. It was soo quiet and peacefull. I stopped in at the Tao of Tea, ordered a lovely flower tea and yummy chinese lunch..followed by a bus ride back to my hotel room to get ready for my flight back to Florida.
The drive around the Pacific coast, Florence, Oregon and Newport was healing. It's so green and lush around there..

Have a look:

Food was delicious- wish i could remember the name..

Scenic drive along the coastline, pretty lighthouses & bridges along the way..

Thousands of Pine trees..perfect habitat for Bears

I kind of imagined the movie, Pocahantas was made in Portland..it has the native american indian influence and culture..definately worth a visit i say!

Mondays quote & Delight

Well, Hello!
Hope you had a wonderfull weekend.
It's roaring with thunder outside-quite scary i might add. Everytime I experience such weather, it helps me respect nature more.Thunder & lightning is so powerfull and it's amazing to know that no human power can stop it.Incredible.Comes to show how vulnerable we really are. Anyhow,
I spent my weekend trying to housetrain our kitten. He's been using everywhere to potty except his litter box and it's driving us up the wall!!Neither one of us have the heart to give him away.
On a happier note, james made late night cupcakes for my sweet tooth and earlier we enjoyed tasty, fresh home-made spaghetti bolognaise from our dear friends around the corner. I feel so spoilt.

Modoc ~ A good read

The Story Of the Greatest Elephant that ever lived!

I really loved this book but I can't believe it all to be true.
I cried so much while reading it. Watchout- it will definately pull on your heartstrings!
You'll need a box of tissues.

In case you don't know the story, here's the Amazon blurb:
Modoc is the joint biography of a man and an elephant born in a small German circus town on the same day in 1896. Bram was the son of an elephant trainer, Modoc the daughter of his prize performer. The boy and animal grew up devoted to each other. When the Wunderzircus was sold to an American, with no provision to take along the human staff, Bram stowed away on the ship to prevent being separated from his beloved Modoc. A shipwreck off the Indian coast and a sojourn with a maharajah were only the beginning of the pair's incredible adventures. They battled bandits, armed revolutionaries, cruel animal trainers, and greedy circus owners in their quest to stay together. They triumphed against the odds and thrilled American circus audiences with Modoc's dazzling solo performances, only to be torn apart with brutal suddenness, seemingly never to meet again. Hollywood animal trainer Ralph Helfer rescued Modoc from ill-treatment and learned her astonishing story when Bram rediscovered her at Helfer's company. His emotional retelling of this true-life adventure epic will make pulses race and bring tears to readers' eyes.
I am now busy reading Zamba

Due to my incredible interest and love for elephants, I highly dislike the use of animals in circus. I find it to be very unnatural for them and the only one who benefits from it is the viewers/ owner. It might be funny and entertaining to see all the tricks they do, but just remember what training those animals have to go through- to perform for your 12 dollar ticket. It's cruel. No amount of money can value any life.

Elephants are a symbol of wisdom in asian cultures and are famed for their memory and intelligence, where they are thought to be on par with cetaceans and hominids.
Aristotle once said the Elephant was "the beast which passeth all others in wit and mind".

I have to admit that when I hear about wild animals attacking humans, I do not feel sorry for the human, for 1. they entered their natural habitat at their own risk, or 2. the animal is in an unnatural enviroment and feeling threatened or afraid or trapped and responding to it = disaster.

I feel the same about hunting. I think it's ok to hunt for food and eat it, but to do it for a trophy/ hobby is just plain heartless. This is how animals become extinct. They all form an equal part in our eco- system.

There's many films out -teaching us about wildlife and to pay them some respect.
I cannot recall them all right now, but watch:

  • Temple Grandin
  • Gorrilas in the mist
  • Planet earth (tv)
  • The Cove (documentary)
  • Behind the Mask(documentary)
  • Sharkwater(documentary)
  • Peaceable Kingdom(documentary)
  • Arctic Tale
  • Grizzly Man
  • March of the Penguins
  • Wild Parrots of Telegraph hill
  • Wolves: A legend returns to yellowstone

I'm off to go volunteer at the shelter now. I'm looking forward to the 6 o'clock workshop.

Breakfast

Ok so, today I had toast & banana slices for breakfast. I'm trying to cut down on how much I eat per portion and also to eat healthier. I gained 10 pounds since we moved to Florida from St Maarten! i'm not happy with myself but the climate change is to blame aswell I think. If it was sunny and warm all year round I woudl be fine, but it's Friggin cold I tell ya.
I was hoping to see snow but I guess it won't happen in this part.

MoooOo

Look at Kayla ( my cousin's) Cute drawing!!
It's soooo cute! I just love it. see the pretty pink patches.

Pumpkin Soup for the Soul

James made a delicious Pumpkin soup! I love his cooking- his food always tastes better than mine, except of course, my famous Banana loaf!

My belly is full. I'm gona read a bit then probably fall asleep.

Hi all!
Last night I finished another painting and started a new one which kept me up till 4am. I'm not too fond of my new painting but I will work on it a little more and hopefully get it to something worth looking at.
The neighbourhood cat, 'Hobo'(i named her) was on our porch last night in the freezing cold weather, begging to come inside so I took her in for the night, gave her food & water & litter box, which she used and I let her back out again this morning.. she hasn't been back. I hope she'll be warm tonight. She is white with grey patches and no tail. She's very friendly & loveable.

(hahaha- my hubby just told me 'she called and said she won't be coming here tonight- she's staying at her boyfriend' - i said, 'that's not what she told me- she said she's coming back for a place to nap' - so I guess Hobo is lying to one of us- will see  ;)

but seriously-I decided once my pets all pass away, that's it- no more! It's hard to say no, but one must be strong.I have a real weakness when it comes to anipals. Even though they can't talk, I feel I can understand them.
Anyway, I will post some pics of my paintings when i'm done..i'm still in the beginner stages, experimenting with different tecniques and mediums, sooner or later I will add more detail.

My Hobbes

Our planet ~ Earth

Geography lesson
Most of us take our everyday life for granted, we want this, we want that, little do we realise we have it all! In today's modern society, we gravitate towards materialistic things. Ever imagined life on another planet? It might not be as cosy, luxurious or welcoming as our planet we live on- Earth.
In fact, we could possibly die of starvation, thirst or sunburn if we lived on another planet. I love Earth & i'm happy it's home for us all. There has been speculation of life on another planet but not yet confirmed.
Let's all make it our mission to take care of the enviroment & all living things, afterall, we do live together in the web of life. And, I will add that even though we different in many ways, shape & form, doesn't mean we any less! Any form of life plays an equally important role in our eco-system.

Here's a few Earth facts to read:

Our planet is the third planet from the Sun and the fifth largest of the eight planets in our Solar System. It is located between Mars and Venus, which are also terrestrial planets. Earth has a number of nicknames including the Blue Planet and Terra. The most remarkable thing about our planet is the life that thrives all over our planet. Not only are there plants, but there are also animals, sea creatures, birds, and other diverse species.

Scientists have often tried to discover what makes earth such an ideal place for sustaining life. The Earth has been described as being in the habitable zone, which is a theoretical area in a Solar System where the conditions are optimal for the existence of life. Scientists are using the habitable zone to find extrasolar planets that may be able to support life. Earth is also the only planet in our Solar System with tectonic plates. The plate tectonics help protect our planet from overheating like Venus because the carbon in plants makes its way back into the Earth and is recycled. Liquid water is also an important element for life. Just over 70% of Earth’s surface area is water.

A Quote of Note

My Symphony

To live content with small means.... To seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion.... To be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich.... To study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly.... To listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart.... To bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never.... In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common....
...........this is to be my symphony.

William Henry Channing

The focus is on

Quality over quantity.  The beauty of this goal is that it's applicable to every aspect of life, and in every aspect it covers, it's totally perfect!  I specifically mean this though in a couple of ways: one, with my friends and two, with my wardrobe.  As far as friends, I've been living this rule for awhile and it's made me really happy, so I am taking it even further in 2011.  I used to be the kind of person who had a lot of people I surrounded myself with.  In a way, I almost stretched myself too thin and in effect, would come across as flaky because I just couldn't give my time equally to all the people I chose to have in my life.  And with this came me keeping people in my life who were toxic.  I had so many "friends," but not enough friends.  Note one is with quotations, one is not.  A couple of years ago I starting purging my life of all of the toxic people in it.  I never broke ties with anyone, but I just allowed the friendships to kind of drift in their own way.  I let go of those who were not people I wanted to surround myself with; girls who only gossiped and talked badly about one another, people who made me feel bad for being me, etc. etc.  You have no idea how freeing it is to let go of negativity in your life, be it your own thoughts or people.  It's amazing.  And with this new and open space in my heart, I was able to focus on the people in my life who really mattered, both family and friends.  Now instead of twenty people I call my closest friends, I have just a handful.  But that handful happens to be the nicest, kindest, best-hearted group of human beings I know!  Quantity isn't important, it's the quality that matters, and I feel very fortunate to have the friends that I do.

And on a more materialistic note, this year I will be focusing on the same mantra in my wardrobe.  I'm looking to really build up more quality than quantity in my closet.  I gravitate towards both ends of the spectrum, but in this next year I'm looking forward to more so "collecting" things that I can wear for a lifetime, and finally start building a wardrobe I can get more use out of over a longer period of time.

Bye 2010 ~ Hello 2011

2010 Q&A

What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?
Lots of things! I started my own personal blog. I went to my very first football game-front row seats- Florida state. Went to see Snoop dogg, Unknown Hinson, Sublime & a few others live at a music fest in Orlando, got paid to spend time living on a yacht in miami as stewardess, i was a crewmember in the Miami boatshow. Had my wedding ceremony in South africa, cape town.  Went on a safari- it was awesome! Touched a leopard, went wine tasting for first time ever @ Spier, took my husband up Table Mountain, explored history on Robben island, took the longest flight of my life - 16hrs straight home to SA & back to US. Tubing on the Ichetucknee river, explored the florida caves, 2010 was the first year i tried a Big Mac and fell inlove with it (sadly). I experienced Panama city & beach as well as Shell island. Started volunteering at the Humane Society & Animal shelter.I tried oysters for the very first time-and they were delicious with jalapeno, cheese & cajun spice.
so much more, i can't recall at the moment..

Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't think I made any and I'm pretty sure I won't again this year. I never keep that sort of thing. I'm more of a healthy habits over resolutions kind of girl. I do believe in setting realistic goals.

What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
winning the lottery

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010:
